On this day in 1864, the territory of Montana was created by President Lincoln in an attempt to create new free territories during Civil War. However, due to its’ unstable frontier, the creation did little to aid the Union. It was not until the 1850s that significant settlements took root. Montana finally became the 41st state in 1889.
